Rochester Institute of Technology

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private university located within the town of Henrietta in the Rochester, New York metropolitan area. It is composed of nine academic colleges, including the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Rochester Institute of Technology ranks among the "Best Engineering Colleges By Salary Potential" in the United States.

The Institute began as a result of an 1891 merger between the Rochester Athenaeum and the Mechanics Institute.

It originally resided within the city of Rochester, New York. RIT was selected by the Federal government to be the site of the newly founded National Technical Institute for the Deaf in 1966.

Its first Ph.D. program, in Imaging Science, which is also the first Ph.D. program of its kind in the U.S, was started in 1990.

RIT offers academic opportunities that can be said to extend far beyond science, engineering, and technology. Innovative programs in many emerging career fields are offered at Rochester Institute of Technology, which are designed to prepare the students for many different challenges throughout their life.

The current campus is housed on a 1,300 acres property, which is largely covered with woodland and fresh-water swamp. It is a very diverse wetland which is home to a number of somewhat rare plant species. 237 buildings and 5.1 million square feet of building space comprise the campus.

The campus was named a "Campus Sustainability Leader" by the Sustainable Endowments Institute in 2009. Rochester Institute of Technology is home to 30 diverse international and local Greek organizations.
